What is Potter's Special?
Potter’s Special is a unique collaborative project between Sussex Kintsugi and local potters who value both the craft of ceramics and the art of transformation. These workshops go beyond traditional ideas of repair — they explore the intentional act of breaking as a creative gesture, inviting participants to reshape and reinterpret the ceramic form through the lens of Modern Kintsugi. Each edition of Potter’s Special begins with a hand-thrown bowl made by a featured potter. These bowls are then carefully and deliberately broken, creating the raw material for a new story. Participants are guided through a hands-on process using contemporary Kintsugi materials to highlight, not hide, the fractures — forming something new, meaningful, and one-of-a-kind. More than a workshop, Potter’s Special is a conversation between maker, mender, and material. It is an invitation to slow down, reflect, and engage deeply with imperfection as a space for creativity.
Workshop Experience
Each Potter’s Special session takes place in the unique and character-filled studio of the collaborating potter. These are not generic venues — they are real, working spaces, filled with the textures, tools, and quirks of the maker’s world. From hand-thrown works lining rustic wooden shelves to the earthy scent of clay and glaze, the atmosphere invites creativity and calm. Every corner tells a story, making the experience immersive and inspiring from the moment you step in.

Past Collaborations:
Host a Workshop With Us
We are currently seeking studio potters interested in collaborating on Potter’s Special — a unique series of Modern Kintsugi workshops that bring together contemporary ceramics and the philosophy of creative transformation.
Each edition is hosted in the potter’s own studio and features hand-thrown bowls made specifically for the event. These are then intentionally broken and transformed by participants using modern Kintsugi techniques, guided by Andri Maimaridou, a professional specialist conservator.
If you are a potter with an interest in wabi-sabi, storytelling through materials, and offering a meaningful hands-on experience to the public, we would love to hear from you.
To express interest or request more information, please contact Andri via email info@sussexkintsugi.co.uk
